Moving from what Big Data is, to what Big Data can do

As Big Data technology has grown more ubiquitous, more and more companies are moving beyond asking what is Big Data, to what Big Data can do? We have continuously collected these use cases as examples of the business objectives that can be achieved with Big Data. Early adopters of Big Data, such as T-Mobile, have seen their

churn rate cut down by 50 percent through Big Data insights. BigData-Startups has also highlighted use cases from the transportation, agriculture, finance and education industries. Each highlighted use case provides an in-depth look at the business problem the company faced and how it used Big Data to solve that problem.

Now many of these Big Data use cases have been compiled into a visually interactive format by Dell. Also check out the SlideShare of the use cases below.

Many of the company examples highlighted on BigData-Startups can be divided into specific use case categories:

1. Optimize Funnel Conversion

Through Big Data analytics, companies can track leads throughout the sales process in order to uncover insights on how to improve conversions. T-mobile, as mentioned above, reduced its churn rate by using multiple data indicators to segment customers and better target their needs.

2. Behavioral Analytics

Consumer behavior data is also an invaluable resource for learning what prompts a consumer to continue to use a particular product. Time Warner Cable, for example, keeps tabs on how often customers tune in, the level of customer engagement and peak usage times in order to improve service.

3. Predictive Support

Big data combined with the Internet of Things provides a powerful tool for pre-emptively addressing maintenance issues and other malfunctions. For instance, Southwest Airlines uses sensor data in order to predict potential safety issues in the planes, so malfunctions can be addressed early before they interrupt flight schedules.

These are just three examples of the many applications of Big Data. What other applications of what Big Data can do would you add?
