IBM Partners With Tom Watson To Showcase Company's Watson Analytics At Golf's Masters

The Masters Tournament and Augusta National Golf Club don’t take their commercial partnerships lightly. The club is very careful about who they partner with and permits only four minutes of commercials per hour during the television broadcast of golf’s first annual Major tournament.

One of the tournament’s long-time partners is IBM +0.74%, which has traditionally used the tournament as a vehicle to unveil new technology to golf fans. Two years after the company’s relationship with the club was mostly linked to the membership status of IBM CEO Ginni Rometty, the computer giant is now able to turn the attention back to its technology during the tournament. To do so, they partnered with two-time Masters winner Tom Watson, who will be making his final Masters appearance this year, to highlight the company’s IBM Watson cognitive intelligence platform.

The partnership will be highlighted in new commercials to air during the tournament, featuring analysis of Watson’s Masters performances over the years. Some insights include – for every 10 mph wind guts, Watson was 1.2 strokes better than the field, and for every 10% increase in humidity, Watson scored 0.6 strokes better than the field.
